MATILDA
I absolutely adored Matilda
as a child. I loved how smart she was, actually the Dr. Phil of her
kindergarten, doling out advice and wisdom that even her teacher, Miss Honey,
finds helpful.
Recently my younger nephew,
Aarav visited us; he is only 7 and such a big bookworm. He usually carries 2-3
books with him all the time.
This time he demanded me to
narrate a story to him. Not too good at kids stories I checked his little bag
and what a delight to see Matilda as one of the books he was carrying that day.
So I narrated and acted the story-line and he laughed and laughed and laughed.
Seeing Matilda stand up to a
bully so much larger than her always gave me hope as a kid. Though it’s a kid’s
literature it was such a powerful and inspiring story. I believe books don’t
have to be a million pages to be wonderful.
I told Aarav, Matilda was
also a bookworm like him so he laughed even more and could relate to her. Posting a picture of this little rockstar :)
When he left it was late
evening, I started making my bed and at the same time somewhere at the back of
my mind I felt this book left me with a question. I thought it ended very
abruptly.
Matilda leaves her parents in
the dust (or rather her parents leave her) to go live with Miss Honey. I accept
that this is a children’s book and most kids don’t need these sorts of answers,
but I require them.
Roald Dahl, I wish you’d
written a sequel!
The story of young Matilda will delight all who read it. Having parents like the Wormwoods is tragic for any child, but Matilda happens to be the kind of "sensitive and brilliant " girl most normal parents would adore. I strongly believe Matilda left her parents in the end by convincing Miss Honey to live with her forever.
ReplyDeletewow! that's convincing :) Unfortunately her parents underestimated her.
ReplyDeleteBut the good news for you is that i can see a little Matilda (traits of a genius and way ahead of her time and age) in Aarav too. He is the smartest boy i've ever met and that makes me love him more. A lot. He's special!
